The Amazon

The Amazon River - Peru

Hot, muggy, muddy, buggy....and wonderful. Becci and her husband, Mark, took an extraordinary journey
to a remarkable place....The Amazon. Their expedition into the heart of the Amazon rainforest
was a voyage of discovery into an area that is home to what may well be the greatest profusion of life on Earth.
.
What follows is only a taste of their adventure . . ..

The Amazon River
The Amazon is by far the largest river system in the world.
The extensive waterways and favorable climatic conditions have
fostered the greatest development of rainforest to be found anywhere in the world.

The "Amazon Queen"
This was our home for the first leg of our trip. We journeyed down
the Amazon for several hundred miles.

River Village
It's the end of the rainy season and floodwaters are high.

Transportation
Children who live in these villages learn from a very young
age to traverse on the river.

Piranha
Fish, including piranha, are a staple diet of the villagers.

Piranha Teeth
You do have to watch your fingers.

Capybara
The largest rodent in existence, they are also great swimmers.

Caiman
Take care where you walk and swim along the river!

Entering the Jungle
We ultimately left our riverboat to venture further into the heart of the rainforest
to stay in a thatched, open air, 'lodge'. The only way there . . . on foot . . .
rubber boots recommended.

Eyes of the rainforest
We were always being watched as we trekked through the jungle.

Poison Dart Frog
Tiny but deadly.

Jaguar Tracks!
You may not see them, but they see you.

Our Jungle 'Lodge'
No electricity, no hot water, no doors, no laundry service.
But we're surrounded by pristine rainforest.

Our 'Room'

Canopy Tower
This tower spirals upward over 100 feet. When you finish the climb, you're well rewarded.

Panoramic Canopy Views

The Hide
We waited for 4 hours . . . in silence . . . crouched in a cramped, hot, lean-to.
Why?

Macaws!
Their arrival was breathtaking.

Blue & Yellow, Red & Green, and Scarlet Macaws

The Clay Lick
Our hide was positioned right in front of one of the largest known 'clay licks'
where hundreds of parrots and macaws flock to this vital source of minerals.

Shaman
We also had the unusual experience of meeting with a local
Medicine Man, known as a Shaman.

Shaman Potions

Bugs
Everyone wants to know how big they are.

Day's End
The adventure continues . . .
